Martin Luther King Jr. dijo una vez: «Siempre es el momento correcto para hacer lo correcto». Este fue el tema de la celebración del Dr. King Day of Unity el pasado 20 de enero. Durante 39 años, el Club Martin Luther King Jr. local ha celebrado la vida, las palabras y el impacto del Dr. King. El evento de este año se centró en King y su conexión con la comunidad de Fort Wayne.
«Queríamos asegurarnos de hacer una afiliación de quién era el Dr. King», dijo George Hicks, presidente del Club MLK de Fort Wayne. El Dr. Clifford Buttram Jr., director de la Escuela de Negocios Keith Busse de la Universidad de Saint Francis, contó a más de 300 asistentes sobre la visita de MLK a Fort Wayne en junio de 1963, menos de tres meses antes de su famoso discurso «Tengo un sueño» el 28 de agosto de 1963 en Washington, D.C. La participación de King en la fraternidad Alpha Phi Alpha fue detallada por Clifford Clarke, fundador de C2 IT Advisors y miembro de Alpha Phi Alpha. El reverendo Angelo Mante, director ejecutivo de Alive Community Outreach, habló sobre cómo su programa local para jóvenes se basaba en los principios de no violencia del Dr. King. «(Alive) está haciendo grandes cosas dentro del sistema escolar y con los jóvenes», agregó Hicks, «es importante que los jóvenes entiendan quién era el Dr. King y qué representaba, especialmente hoy en día».
«El Dr. King y su lucha no fueron solo por la gente de raza negra, es por la igualdad para todas las personas», agregó Hicks. El MLK Club honra el legado del Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. a través del activismo comunitario, la participación de los jóvenes y las actividades educativas multiculturales. El MLK Club está planeando ofrecer viajes en autobús por los sitios históricos de los Derechos Civiles para los jóvenes de Fort Wayne.
Las becas Glyn R. Gleason de este año se otorgaron a los estudiantes: Harrison Brooks, Samaria Paige y NysiaWalker. Los premios al Servicio Comunitario se otorgaron a Joseph Ayers, Ruby Bates y la Dra. Andrea DortchThomas.

MLK DAY 2025: The time is always right, to do what is right.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, «The time is always right, to do what is right.» This was the theme of the Dr. King Unity Day Celebration on January 20. For 39 years, the local Martin Luther King Jr. Club has celebrated the life, words and impact of Dr. King. This year’s event focused on King and his connection to the Fort Wayne community.
«We wanted to make sure that we did an affiliation of who Dr. King was,» said George Hicks, President of the MLK Club of Fort Wayne. Dr. Clifford Buttram Jr., Director of the Keith Busse School of Business at the University of Saint Francis, told over 300 attendees about MLK’s visit to Fort Wayne in June 1963, less than three months before his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on August 28, 1963 in Washington, D.C. King’s involvement in the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity was detailed by Clifford Clarke, founder of C2 IT Advisors and Alpha Phi Alpha member. Reverend Angelo Mante, Executive Director of Alive Community Outreach, talked about how his local youth program was based on Dr. King’s principles for nonviolence. «(Alive) is doing great things within the school system and with youth,» added Hicks, «it’s important that the youth understand who Dr. King was and what he represented especially today.»
«Dr. King and his fight wasn’t just for black people, it’s for equity for all people,» Hicks added. The MLK Club honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through community activism, youth engagement and multicultural educational activities. The MLK Club is planning to offer bus tours of historic Civil Rights sites for Fort Wayne youth.
This year’s Glyn R. Gleason scholarships were awarded to students: Harrison Brooks, Samaria Paige and Nysia Walker. Community Service awards were given to Joseph Ayers, Ruby Bates and Dr. Andrea Dortch Thomas.
